All-Star Entertainment Weekend

So it looks like it's shaping up to be an excellent entertainment weekend. The headlining event of course is the Wilco concert on Saturday night, though running in second place is tonight's screening of Punch Drunk Love, a film by Paul Thomas Anderson, noted auteur of films such as Boogie Nights, and Magnolia. The film stars Adam Sandler, in what is expected to be a nuanced, image-changing performance.

I'm sure we'll throw in some fine dining and perhaps a jigger of bombay sapphire or perhaps a bit of grey goose vodka, with the appropriate mixers (Shake with ice and strain into glass).

W I L C O

I'm going to see them at the Orpheum Theatre, Boston, tomorrow night. Should be a great show.

Tired

It's probably a bad sign when you wake up and you're more tired than you were when you went to sleep. I almost think that I'm one of those split personality people who 'falls asleep,' but whose alter ego then awakes and wreaks havoc, leaving the original persona tired and groggy in the morning. Though it could also be that my bed is too soft.

Fast Food Nation

This past weekend, I started reading Fast Food Nation, by Eric Schlosser. Great stuff. Schlosser has constructed a well-researched expose of the fast food industry, from biographies of the Mc'captains of industry to the magic behind the perfect french fry. This morning, on my way to work, I read through a chapter on the industrial marvel and horror that is the cattle slaughterhouse. This graphic description of the meat processing factories of the american midwest read like a stephen king novel, with gore and chaos balanced by cool efficiency. I was reminded of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle -- many of the comments from noted newspapers and journals cited the muckraker Sinclair as a kindred spirit -- and of the episode of The Simpsons where Lisa becomes a vegetarian.

Troy: Come on Jimmy, let's take a peek at the killing floor.
Jimmy: Ohhh!
Troy: Don't let the name throw you Jimmy. It's not really a floor, it's more of a steel grating that allows material to sluice through so it can be collected and exported.

From Lisa the Vegetarian
