MY FAVORITE SCARS

I was once a little boy. That's not much a startling revelation, given that I'm a big boy now. In any event, growing up in Vermont, I did the rambunctious things that little boys do, like climbing trees, scaling fences and stealing carrots from the neighbor's garden. The inevitable result of such shenanigans, and other sophomoric pranks from adolescence (and beyond) is a menagerie of telling scars. Not unsightly, disfiguring scars, but quaint mementos of mishaps from days gone by. Here's a short list of my favorite scars in chronological order:

1. Eyebrow: A slight diagonal line (~Age 3, coffee table 1, Matt 0)
2. Neck: A faint white zig-zag from a kite-flying mishap with my brother (~Age 10)
3. Shoulder: A silver-dollar-sized badge from flying over the handlebars of my bike (~Age 13)
4. Hand: A tiny crescent-moon from an incident involving Bacardi 151 and fire (~Age 21)
5. Knee: A quarter-sized shadow from a ski-related run-in with a certain Colorado pine tree (~Age 24)

Do you have any favorite "keepsakes" from run-ins with objects, inanimate or otherwise?

PADIDDLE VS. POPEYE

At lunch today, I was talking with a co-worker about different games that we play to pass the time during roadtrips. I used to play this fairly common game called padiddle, which you can only play at night. The object of the game is to spot other cars with one headlight out. The first person to spot such a car punches the roof of the car and exclaims "PADIDDLE!" The person with the most padiddles wins. My coworker told me about a variant of the game where you yell "POPEYE!" and then are allowed to punch your fellow traveler in the arm. I think I like padiddle better.

JUST BECAUSE I HAVEN'T POSTED ANYTHING EITHER POETIC OR MONKEY-RELATED IN A WHILE

I hope that this Christmas brings
a monkey to carry my things.
I'll fasten a sack
to my monkey's back -
It can hand me my stuff while it swings.

ON THE ALL-JELLO DIET FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS

I played hoops with Goliath, Paul Bunyan et al last night -- at least it seemed that way. I'm a less-than-towering 5 foot 8 inches tall (maybe 5-9 with my shoes), and last night's league game was against a team of sequoia redwoods. These guys were tall and jacked.

On one trip down the court, I had the privilege of guarding one of the gargantuas, and caught an elbow to the face. It felt like George Foreman wound up and popped the stubble off my chin. Luckily, there was no serious damage (that I know of).

It hurt to eat cereal this morning. Soggy cereal.

A LITTLE LATE TO THE WIZARDRY GAME

This past weekend, in between football, fighting the frenzied masses of holiday shoppers, and a bit of work, I read J.K. Rowling's first opus, Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone. Though it was a quick and enjoyable read, I don't know what all the fuss is about. My expectations may have been set too high due to all of the hype and hooplah (Is that how one spells hooplah?). Plus I had already seen the first movie, so I knew what was going to happen. I'll have to read the The Chamber of Secrets before I watch it on the big screen.

In somewhat related news, one of my friends is starting to freak me out by making lewd and lascivious comments about Hermione Granger.
