A GOOD, CLOSE SHAVE

Though I couldn't come close to growing a full beard, I still have to shave every day to be presentable (well, as presentable as I get). Over the past few years, I've discovered that I enjoy the act of shaving (my face, mind you). There's something about stepping out of the shower, lathering up, and dragging a slim piece of steel across my stubble that reminds me that I'm a man.

Not that I'd forgotten.

"IT HAD PAID THE PRICE OF THE NIGHT"

There's a line from On the Road that describes a Cadillac that is dented and dinged from a cross-country trek and carousing in the city. The car is said to have "paid the price of the night." What a great line. After what is proving to be a stressful week at work, this weekend, Sunday perhaps, I hope to awake, groggy and bleary-eyed thinking, "I have paid the price of the night."

THE GAP BETWEEN MY EARS

Ever since I read Greg's post regarding the Gap commercial where the nubile, scarved women are singing "Love Train," I have had that song stuck - no, cemented - within the pockets of my dura mater.

If the O'Jay's got a nickel for every time that ditty has replayed in my mind's ear, they'd all be living in solid gold houses, driving rocket cars.

People all over the world (Join Hands)...
.
ADDENDUM: btw, if you're looking for the lyrics to the song, you can find them here.

EAT FRESH, MY ASS

On Tuesday's a small group of co-workers and I venture over to Subway, which sits in a food court a couple of blocks from my office. We go on Tuesday's because they have a reduced price sandwich deal, and we are a parsimonious lot.

Today, my sandwich was mediocre at best and far from fresh. You get what you pay for. Even so, I'd still like to vent my disappoinment by smacking Jared and Clay Henry upside the head. Those goofy, Subway-eating fools.

HEY, JACK KEROUAC

I've been alternating "classic" literature (albeit loosely defined as anything that has classic emblazoned somewhere on the cover) and more recent writings. I'm about 2/3 of the way through reading On The Road by Jack Kerouac. Appropriately enough, I tend to read it in transit. The rumbling walls and whine of the metal wheels on the metal tracks of the subway train add an audible backdrop to the journeys of Sal Paradise, and for brief glimpses, it's like I'm headed to see Dean Moriarty, to experience the jazz poetry bop and fusion of some 'frisco club. That's where the parallel ends.

I don't think the members of the beat generation rode the rails or highways on their way to and from management consulting jobs.

SCRAPIN' OFF THE OLD EYEBALLS

My company celebrated the holiday season with an all-out bash last night. It was a semi-formal affair held in a swank hotel in downtown Boston. The bar was open, the mood was lively, and I had just the right amount to drink -- enough to give me that nice warm and fuzzy feeling, but not enough for me to start table dancing. Even so, upon returning home, even the right amount of alcohol tends to put me to sleep quickly, sometimes before brushing my teeth etc. This morning, I awoke realizing that I had not yet removed my contact lenses. I loathe the unpleasant feeling of slowly peeling off one's contact lenses, like some translucent band-aid. Those of you with less-than-perfect vision may be able to commiserate.
