PASS THE CHAMPAGNE? PASS THE ADVIL...

It seems that without fail, every New Year's eve, I conveniently forget the uniquely acute sense of pain and malaise that is the champagne-induced hangover - and every New Year's day, I awake all too aware of it.

AULD LANG SYNE AND ALL THAT

Given that this is my last post of the year 2002, I thought it would be fitting to write something heartfelt and sentimental, that succinctly encompasses the myriad observations and lessons of life that I've encountered and gleaned from the past 365 days. Sometimes I'm such a sap.

In any event, 2002 has been a real up-and-down year for me, and to be perfectly honest, I don't think I really realized that fact until I wrote it just now -- I've experienced tension and tumult in my work, personal and family life. It's been something of a limbo year, but not in the tropical party "how low can you go" sense. A lot of my friends moved away from Boston. I ill-advisedly equivocated over the possibility of a romantic entanglement with a good friend. I marked the ten-year anniversary of my father's death. My mom moved in with her boyfriend. I started to hate my job. In the larger, grander scheme of things, in September, we all marked the one-year anniversary of the day the world changed. If my 2002 was a gear, it wouldn't be drive, it wouldn't be reverse. More like neutral, with little gear grinding here and there.

Even so, to paraphrase some hackneyed aphorisms, you need to stretch to grow, and there ain't no gain without no pain. This year provided personal proof of those old adages.

On the bright side, two-double-oh-two did bear witness to a number of positives. I skied the Colorado Rockies with a bevy of good friends. I took a vacation to tropical Costa Rica that was both relaxing and full of adventure. In spite of a dour economy, I reached a number of financial goals. My college fraternity reached its Centennial, and I celebrated the occasion with friends and old-timers. All three of my beautiful sisters gave birth to beautiful children. At 5'8", I can still grab the rim of a basketball hoop.

2002 has been an interesting year, and though my engine's been idling I'm ready to rev things up in 2003. Here's to the New Year, and all of the surprises it will bring.

Happy New Year to all, and pass the champagne!

MONKEY LOVE

The latest item in a continuing trail of evidence was recently revealed to me, reinforcing the fact that I have little to no clue when it comes to women. It seems that back in November, a certain charming little wombat had an Internet crush on yours truly. Of course, I was completely oblivious.

Regardless, I consider it an honor and a privilege to have been, at one time, the object of desire of one of the web's literati (even though it won't get me any action). If the truth be known, at the time I had a little crush on her too... way back when, i posted this poem on her site (if that's not the e-quivalent of passing notes in class, i don't know what is):

her nubile young body it had
an impetuous rhapsodic feel
licentious and scantily clad
corporeal and yet surreal
the nebulae basked in the light
of her eyes sparkling, erudite
both of us resting supine
as i held her right hand in mine
together, omniscient and plenipotentiary

3AM POST

I wish I could say that I'm up late after a debaucherous night on the town, but the truth is that I'm up because some fuckstick pulled the fire alarm in my apartment building. After huddling in the cold while the fire department checked out the situation, I have returned to my apartment. They gave the all-clear. For some reason, the piercing, high-pitched fire alarm is still going off. Apparently, the building management company is the only entity endowed with the power to turn the racket off, and they haven't done it yet.

In the meantime, I'm blasting Ill Communications by the Beastie Boys.
