LAZY DAYS AND SUMMER HAZE

The air, replete with summer's indolence,
sits lazily on eaves and alleyways
while tendrils of soft sunlight slowly glint
serenely, bathing rooftops with a haze
of air so full, each breath a slaking drink,
each swell of breast a sip of August mist.
Miles of supple clouds descend, all sinking
like a sail when harbor winds desist,
resting softly for a spell. And now
reclining, I, as lazy beads of dew
inch across my tanned and furrowed brow,
wait patiently until the day is through,
and light and night, at dusk, are brought together
reveling in sultry summer weather.

SOMETHING THIS GOOD MUST BE A KRIME

A Krispy Kreme doughnut shop recently opened in the Boston area and one of our lovely administrative assistants brought in a box yesterday. She offered me one after lunch and it just about made my day. Later, curiosity got the better of me and I decided to investigate the "nutritional" value of what I had just ingested. This is what I found.

So-o bad and yet oh s-o-o-o g-o-o-o-o-d...

SUMMER GLOVIN'

It's now officially summer. A heat wave has hit the streets of Boston, the Red Sox season is in full swing, and yesterday, I broke out my baseball glove to play catch for the first time this year. Having lived within shouting distance of Fenway Park for 6 of the past 8 years, baseball has come to epitomize the summer for me, and a lazy game of long toss with a couple of friends under the effulgence of a hazy late-June sky was just the ticket.

Apparently my coordination has suffered in the intervening months since my last game of long toss. My eyes, adjusting to the sodium lights over a dimpled patch of grass in the Fens, deceived me. As I settled under a lazy fly from my battery-mate, the ball caromed off the webbing of my mitt and into my forehead. It was reminiscent of an outfield play by Jose Canseco, in which a warning-track shot to left-field bounced off his head and out of the park for a home run.

Luckily, mine was a glancing blow and I escaped the debacle with only a small red mark to show for it. Besides, what do I use that part of my brain for anyway? It's a small price to pay for one of the joys of summer.

POLISHING THE PORCELAIN

You've probably heard of the expression, "praying to the porcelain god." Well, this weekend, after a particularly intense night of carousing, one of my friends crashed at my apartment for the night. During his stay at Chez Matt, he not only prayed to the big white bowl, but he was so intoxicated that he simulated a copulatory act (thankfully, while fully clothed) with said bathroom fixture. My friend is feeling much better now, but I don't think the toilet will ever be the same.
