STAR ON THE RISE

Wednesday night, I went to a show at the House of Blues, in Harvard Square. Mieka Pauley, a charming, dulcet-voiced, Boston-area guitarist opened for Franky Perez, a boisterous rock-and-roller out of Las Vegas.

Mieka, with a voice that, for me, conjures equal parts Norah Jones and Sarah McLachlan, is the real deal -- a true talent. She also happens to be the girlfriend of one of my co-workers and the two of them are a Hollywood power couple in the making. He's a renaissance man of sorts -- a consultant, stand-up comedian and soon-to-be-published author. They're the kind of people of whom I can't wait to say, "I knew them way back when..."

INCOHERENT MUTTERINGS AND RAMBLINGS

I haven't been getting much sleep lately. Unfortunately for you, the reader, this translates into a post with little structure and without a point.

For a change, my sleep deprivation is because I've been enjoying the summer and having fun as opposed to working too much.

On Saturday night, I saw American Wedding followed by an outdoor performance of Macbeth. If there are two stories distanced further apart on the entertainment spectrum, I'd like to know what they are.

If this whole consulting thing doesn't work out, I could make a serviceable Boston tour guide.

A lecture hall in the middle of a summer night feels a lot like a movie theatre in the early morning.

I bought a new golf club for a hundred bucks. New club good. Hit ball far.

The Typhoid vaccine makes your shoulder (well, my shoulder) a lot more sore than the Hepatitis-A vaccine.

My boss had a party at his house the other day and he showed me his expansive wine cellar. A small part of me thought he was a pretentious snob. A small part of me wanted to be that pretentious snob. The rest of me stopped thinking and drank his wine.

Eating a scoop of ice cream on a hot summer night may be as close to perfection as we humans are intended to get.
