CROSS-TRAINING

One of my friends from work is hosting a fundraiser tonight at a local watering hole. He's running a marathon later this year and is raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I respect the fact that he's boozing it up during his race training. I've been subscribing to that same marathon exercise regimen recently, just without all of that pesky running.

GO SHORTY, IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY

On Saturday night, I celebrated my birthday with a gathering of friends in Boston. Yes folks, I'm now twenty-six.

The celebration started with a sumptuous meal, which was for the most part uneventful, save for the piercing laughter of a bachelorette party that was sharing the dining room with us. There is something unique and frightening about the laughter of a bachelorette party. Perhaps it's the way the condom-covered veils reflect the sound.

The evening was, as birthdays often are, a bit of a blur. There was the flood of celebratory liquor, which, much to my dismay, included a number of tequila shots. It's funny how the taste of tequila lingers in your mouth, even after frenzied toothbrushing and mouth gargling. It's like the smell of a garbage can after you've taken out the trash, or the way a pair of gym shorts adopts the odor its owner.

Needless to say, I wasn't exactly early-to-rise on Sunday morning. Still, I had a nice brunch on Newbury Street and fielded phone calls from family. The highlight of these phone calls was a conversation with my 3-year-old nephew, who warbled, "Hi-Uncle-Matt-are-you-going-to-have-streamers-and-balloons-and-cake-and-party-hats-for-your-birthday?" in that stream-of-consciousness, sing-song manner of speech that children often use.

He's celebrating his birthday soon as well. I hope he has as much fun on his birthday as I did on mine -- but hopefully without the tequila.
